A burst and a fountain of oil? Why hydraulic hoses burst and how to avoid "whipping"

Do you know this scenario? Mid-season, work is in full swing, when suddenly you hear a loud bang, reminiscent of a gunshot. A split second later, the machine stops, and everything around is covered in a fountain of hot, expensive oil. If you're lucky, it only results in a stain and downtime. If not, a "whipping" hose, torn under pressure, can damage adjacent components or, worse, seriously injure the operator.

Hydraulic hoses are the "circulatory system" of your machine. Unfortunately, they are also one of the most neglected components. We usually only replace them when they break. Experts at BRhydraulic decided to examine the most common causes of hose failures. See what kills your hoses and learn how to extend their lifespan!

1. Friction and chafing – the slow death of a hose

Statistics are relentless: over 50% of hydraulic hose failures result from mechanical damage, specifically friction. The machine vibrates during operation, and the hose, pulsating under pressure, constantly tightens and loosens.

If the hose touches a sharp edge of the frame, a pin, or another hose, its outer rubber layer slowly wears away. What happens next?

  • The steel braid (hose reinforcement) becomes exposed.

  • The steel loses its protection against moisture and mud, so it quickly begins to rust.

  • Corroded wires break, the braid loses its strength, and at the next pressure surge, the hose bursts like a balloon.

Solution: Regularly check the routing of your hoses. In areas prone to friction, always use spiral guards (so-called plastic springs). This is an investment of just a few euros, which can save a hose worth several hundred.

2. Rubber aging and murderous UV radiation

Rubber is an organic material that loses its properties over time – it deteriorates, hardens, and becomes brittle. Even if the machine is in the garage and not working, the hoses slowly age. However, the biggest enemy is the sun and UV radiation, as well as extreme temperatures (too hot oil from the inside, frost from the outside).

If the hose has micro-cracks on its outer coating and, when bent, resembles an old, cracked tire, it's a sign that its days are numbered. It is generally accepted that the average safe service life of a hydraulic hose is from 5 to a maximum of 7 years.

3. Pressure surges and poorly selected braiding

A hydraulic system is not a calmly flowing river. Closing and opening distributors, sudden braking, or hitting the ground with a bucket cause hydraulic shocks (pressure peaks). If the operating pressure of the pump is 200 bar, it can jump to as much as 350 bar in a fraction of a second during a shock!

That's why choosing the right hose is so important:

  • 1SN (single steel braid): For lower pressure systems (e.g., oil returns).

  • 2SN (double braid): Standard in most agricultural and construction machinery.

  • 4SP / 4SH (four spiral braids): For the heaviest equipment and extreme pressures. Replacing a double-braided hose with a cheaper single-braided hose guarantees a quick burst.

4. Crimping errors (DIY workshop)

Crimping hoses is a process that requires incredible precision. If a workshop uses an inappropriate, cheap ferrule, incorrectly selects the clamp diameter (even by 0.2 mm!), or does not remove (skive) the rubber layer in multi-braided hoses, the pressure will simply pull the fitting out of the hose. This creates an extremely dangerous "whipping" effect.

Summary

Bursting hydraulic hoses are not "just the nature of the machine." It's a sign that the hoses were poorly chosen, poorly routed, or simply too old. Regular inspections and the use of guards are the simplest way to avoid stress and costly leaks.
