Engineering Theory – How does our calculator work?
The tool is based on classical fluid mechanics principles. First, the calculator determines the flow velocity and assesses its character using the Reynolds number (Re).
Reynolds number formula:

Re = (v * d * 1000) / nu

Where:

  • v – flow velocity (m/s)
  • d – internal conduit diameter (mm)
  • nu – kinematic viscosity of oil (cSt)

If the result exceeds 2320, the flow becomes turbulent, generating significantly higher losses. We then apply the Darcy-Weisbach equation to obtain the final pressure drop.
Pressure drop formula:

𝚫p = ꟛ * (L / D) * (rho * v² / 2)

Where:

  • – friction coefficient
  • L – conduit length (m)
  • D – internal diameter (m)
  • rho – fluid density (kg/m3)
