Buying "ordinary hydraulic oil" at the nearest gas station is a gamble that can cost you thousands of zlotys. 1. Quality classes, or mysterious letters: HL, HLP, HV
Not every hydraulic oil is suitable for everything. The oil base is enriched with additive packages (so-called improvers) that determine the conditions under which the fluid can operate. See what the most popular abbreviations mean:

HL: The most basic oil, without advanced additives. Designed for systems operating under low pressure, indoors, and at a constant, moderate temperature.

HLP (often also marked as HM): Standard in industry and agriculture. Contains advanced AW (Anti-Wear) additives that prevent wear of pumps and distributors operating under high pressure.

HV (or HVLP / HV / Index): Oil for special tasks. It has a high viscosity index, which means it retains its properties both in bitter cold (it doesn't thicken like tar) and in heat (it doesn't thin out like water). An absolute "must-have" in construction and forestry machinery operating outdoors.
2. Viscosity (VG 32, 46, 68) – why is it so important?
Another key parameter is kinematic viscosity, denoted by the abbreviation VG (Viscosity Grade) and a number. It determines how easily the oil flows through the system and how thick a protective "film" it forms on friction elements.

VG 32 (Thin): Ideal oil for winter. It pumps easily at low temperatures, preventing cavitation in an unheated system.

VG 46 (Golden mean): The most popular viscosity in our climate zone. A universal choice for agricultural and industrial machines operating in moderate to higher temperatures.

VG 68 (Thick): Oil designed for operation in very high ambient temperatures or in heavily loaded and worn systems, where higher viscosity helps to "seal" clearances in older pumps.
Important: Pouring too thick oil (e.g., VG 68 in winter) will cause the pump to "whine" due to lack of lubrication and resistance at the suction. Conversely, too thin oil in hot summer will not create a protective coating, leading to immediate seizure of metal components!
3. When is oil due for replacement? (Sensory diagnostics)
Hydraulic oil degrades, loses its additives, and oxidizes. When should it absolutely be drained and refilled with fresh oil?

Milky color ("Coffee with milk"): The most dangerous symptom! It means that water has entered the system (e.g., through a leaky filler cap or condensation). Such oil completely loses its lubricating properties and leads to system corrosion.

Smell of burning and black color: The oil has overheated, and burnt carbon and metal particles are floating in its volume. Replacement is necessary immediately.

Lack of clarity and foaming: This can mean chemical "fatigue" of the oil or a leak in the pump's suction line (air intake).
4. The myth of mixing – can you add "whatever"?
The short answer is: NO. You should never mix oils of different quality classes (e.g., HL with HV) or from different manufacturers. Why? Each manufacturer uses its own unique chemistry of additives (defoaming, anti-wear). When mixed in the tank, different chemical packages can react with each other, resulting in the precipitation of deposits (so-called sludge), clogging of return filters in a few minutes, or violent foaming of the system.
