Off the scale! When thousands of litres of oil flow: CETOP 10 (NG32) Plate-Mounted Valves

CETOP 10

If you've been following our series on plate-mounted valves, we've come a long way. From the agile and popular NG6 (up to 80 l/min), through the efficient NG10 and powerful NG16, to the heavy-duty NG25 (up to 600 l/min). One would think that physics and engineering wouldn't need anything larger.

And yet. What powers the lock gates on large dams? What controls gigantic forging presses exerting forces of several tens of thousands of tons? What moves the arms of the world's largest mining excavators?

Where flow rates exceed the magical barrier of 1000 liters of oil per minute, the absolute leviathan of power hydraulics enters the arena: the CETOP 10 (NG32) valve. BRhydraulic experts explain the technology that stands at the very top of standardized hydraulics.

1. CETOP 10 (NG32) – The Hydraulic Leviathan

The NG32 designation (according to ISO 4401-10) indicates that the flow channels inside this monster are as large as 32 millimeters in diameter. Such a cross-section allows for the free and safe pumping of even 1100 liters of oil in just 60 seconds at an operating pressure reaching 350 bar.

Valves of this size are no longer just "spare parts". They are colossal blocks of precisely machined cast iron and steel, often weighing from 40 to over 60 kilograms. Their installation or replacement requires the use of overhead cranes or workshop jibs.

You will only find them in extremely heavy industry:

  • Metallurgy and large steel rolling mills.

  • Hydrotechnical infrastructure (dams, locks, hydroelectric power plants).

  • Shipbuilding industry and offshore drilling platforms.

  • Extremely large injection molding machines and industrial presses.

2. A microscopic pilot controls a giant

The operating principle of CETOP 10 is identical to that of its smaller brethren with indirect control (NG16 and NG25), but here the disparity is most striking.

The main spool in an NG32 valve resembles a thick, steel drive shaft rather than a precise valve component. The resistance offered by over a thousand liters of rushing oil is unimaginable. Therefore, a standard, small NG6 (CETOP 03) valve with two solenoids is mounted on the back of this giant.

The small valve on top serves as the "brain". When power is applied, it introduces a small dose of pressurized oil (pilot oil) to the sides of the large spool at the bottom. The hydraulics come alive – it is the pressure of the fluid that does the heavy lifting, moving the main shaft without the slightest problem.

3. Why is plate standardization in NG32 the only way?

Imagine hydraulic pipes or hoses capable of flowing 1100 l/min. These are powerful, thick steel pipelines or reinforced hoses resembling fire hose suction lines, secured with massive SAE flanges.

If such a system required disconnecting the pipeline every time the valve needed replacement or sealing, servicing would take days, and machine downtime costs would be in the hundreds of thousands of zlotys.

Thanks to the ISO (CETOP) plate standard, all this powerful piping is permanently attached to a massive block at the bottom. Valve failure? The service team unbolts 6 huge mounting screws from the top, suspends the 50-kilogram valve on an overhead crane, removes it, and installs a new one (regardless of manufacturer, as long as it meets the NG32 standard). The pipelines remain untouched. This is a triumph of engineering over brutal matter.

Summary

NG32 (CETOP 10) valves are the pinnacle of achievement in flow direction control. This is equipment that does not forgive mistakes, which is why it demands the highest quality materials and a proven "valve on valve" architecture.
