How to build a professional 10, 15, and 20 ton log splitter? (Choosing the actuator)

Siłownik

Building your own hydraulic log splitter is a project that can save you thousands of zlotys compared to purchasing a pre-built, industrial-grade machine. However, the heart of this system – the hydraulic cylinder – is not forgiving of design flaws.

If you choose a cylinder that's too small, the machine will stop at the first gnarled oak stump. If you choose a piston rod that's too thin, the enormous force will simply bend it into an arc at maximum extension.

How to avoid this? BRhydraulic experts have prepared some hard calculations for you. Here's how to choose a cylinder for log splitters with a pressure of 10, 15, and 20 tons.

1. 10-ton splitter – A solid standard for any wood

A 10-ton pressure is the threshold for comfortable work with hard, seasoned hardwood. This splitter can handle most logs up to 50-60 cm in diameter.

  • Which cylinder should I choose? The required cylinder internal diameter is 80 mm .

  • Pressing force: At standard operating pressure from the pump (approx. 200 bar), the 80 mm piston cylinder generates a pushing force exceeding 10 tons (approx. 10,240 kg).

  • Key Parameter (Bar Thickness): In log splitters, the bar extends a considerable distance under full load. To avoid bar bending (buckling), look for 80mm cylinders with a piston rod at least 40mm thick, preferably 50mm . 👉 Check the parts: Hydraulic Cylinders – Piston Ø 80 mm

2. 15 ton splitter – Semi-professional class

When dealing with very thick, twisted, and knotty oak or beech logs, 10 tons may not be enough. A 15-ton increase ensures smooth operation without the wedge getting stuck in the wood.

  • Which cylinder should I choose? The required cylinder internal diameter is 100 mm .

  • Pressing force: The piston's surface area increases dramatically. At 200 bar, a 100 mm diameter cylinder easily achieves a force of nearly 15.7 tons.

  • Key Parameter (Bar Thickness): 15 tons of pressure on a stretched bar is extreme. Here, a 50 mm thick piston rod is the absolute minimum, and 60 mm is recommended .

3. 20+ Ton Splitter – Industrial Monster

A machine with a force of 20 tons (or more) is the equipment for mass production of firewood. Such force can literally cut the wood across the grain and even destroy the splitter's frame if it's not constructed of heavy-duty I-beams.

  • Which cylinder should I choose? The required cylinder internal diameter is 125 mm .

  • Pressing force: A 125 mm diameter piston generates 20 tons of force at 160 bar. If you apply a standard 200 bar of pressure to it, you'll achieve a massive lifting capacity of 25 tons!

  • Key Parameter (Bar Thickness): Under these pressures, there's no room for compromise. The wedge extension bar must be between 60 and 80 mm thick . 👉 Check the parts: Hydraulic Cylinders – Piston Ø 125 mm

4. Builder's Trap: Why is the large log splitter so terribly slow?

You've found the perfect 100mm ram, welded the frame, fired up the machine, and... the ram extends at a snail's pace. The splitting cycle for a single log takes over a minute. What went wrong?

You forgot about pump capacity . A larger cylinder (e.g., 100 mm) is a massive "reservoir" that needs to be filled with oil. A standard, small gear pump (e.g., from a C-330 tractor with a capacity of about 20 l/min) simply can't keep up with the pumping.

  • For a 10 ton splitter (80 mm piston) we recommend a pump with a capacity of 40–60 l/min .

  • For 15-20 ton splitters (100-125 mm pistons) you need a pump generating 60 to even 100 l/min , connected to a sufficiently large distributor (minimum flow 80 l/min) to avoid choking the oil.

Summary

Building a log splitter is pure mathematics and physics. Match the piston diameter to the required tonnage, and the rod thickness to the cylinder stroke to avoid bending. Also, remember to use strong lugs with swivel bearings to compensate for any frame stress.
